Read me
- 1Read me: What it is, the plug-in steps, a guide to each tab, and a note that charts may need redrawing after import.
- 2Settings: Your team or company's name, the date of the Monday that starts week 1, and how close to target counts as close.
- 3KPIs: Ten KPI slots. For each: name, definition, owner, unit, weekly target and whether higher or lower is better.
- 4Weekly log: Fifty-two weeks down, ten KPIs across. You type the values; the week number and week-starting date fill themselves in. 42 weeks of sample numbers for a made-up Tidewater Software Studio.
- 5Google Sheets file (import the .xlsx, or use the make-a-copy link). No scripts, no add-ons.
Rendered from the template's own layout with made-up numbers for Tidewater Software Studio, a company that doesn't exist.
What it answers
- Which KPIs are on target this week, which are close, and which are off?
- Who owns the KPI that keeps missing?
- Has the trend turned, or was last week a blip?
- Can everyone type their own number in, instead of sending it to me?
- Can I look back at an earlier week?

Plugging in your own data
Set it up once, then each owner adds a row a week.
- 1
Make a copy: upload the .xlsx to Google Drive and open it with Sheets, or use the make-a-copy link from your order. Share it with the KPI owners.
- 2
On Settings, type your team name, the Monday that starts week 1 and your close-to-target tolerance.
- 3
On KPIs, define your ten: name, definition, owner, unit, weekly target and direction.
- 4
On Weekly log, type one row per week.
- 5
Read the latest week on Dashboard. To look back, type a week number. Delete the sample labels when you're done.
What your data has to look like
| Column | What goes in it |
|---|---|
| Ten KPI columns | one value per KPI per week, in the order of the KPIs tab; leave a cell empty if you didn't measure it |
| Week number and week-starting date | formulas, leave them alone |
Will it work on your machine?
| App and version | Works? | Notes | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Browser | |||
| Google Sheets in any current browser | Yes | Any up-to-date browser on Windows, Mac, Linux or a Chromebook. It's an .xlsx built for Google Sheets: import it into Drive, or use the make-a-copy link when it's in your order. | |
| Phone and tablet | |||
| Google Sheets mobile app | Partly | Sheets mobile app: fine for looking. Typing into a budget on a phone is possible, not pleasant. | |
| Excel | |||
| Opened in Excel instead | Partly | Opening it in Excel works for reading. Use it in Sheets; that's what it's laid out for. | |
- Several people can type in the Weekly log at once. After import, check the ten trend charts; Sheets sometimes needs them redrawn.

Updates and help
- Bug fixes
- Bug fixes are free for as long as we sell this template. Your copy in Google Drive won't change by itself, so when we fix something, download the newest version with your order number and copy your data across.
- Support
- Questions go to office@primedigitallabs.com. We usually reply within 2 working days.
- What support covers
- Support covers how the template works and anything that's broken. Rebuilding it around a different data structure is custom work, and we're happy to quote for that.
Probably not for you if
- Your KPIs are monthly. The Excel KPI Starter is built for months.
- You want numbers pulled in from other tools automatically. People type them in, or paste.
- You need more than ten KPIs. Past that you need a reporting system; talk to us.

Questions people ask about this one
How is the status worked out?
Each KPI's value is compared with its weekly target, in the direction you set (higher or lower is better). Within the close-to-target tolerance you set on Settings counts as close; beyond that it's off target.
Can I track monthly KPIs too?
Not well. The Dashboard thinks in weeks, one row per week. For monthly numbers, use the KPI Starter.
How many weeks does it hold?
Fifty-two. The sample has 42 of them filled in.
Can I stop people editing each other's rows?
Sheets lets you protect ranges per person. We don't lock anything ourselves.
